National Mom & Pop Business Day – Thank You For Supporting Our Family’s Business

March 29, 2021

What do you get when you mix sail-making expertise with confectionary skills? One great northern Michigan fudge business that has stayed the course for more than 133 years.

The Murdick family arrived in the United States from Germany in the 1800s. Father-and-son sail makers, Henry and Jerome “Rome” Murdick, were commissioned to create canvas awnings for the new Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. With the confectionary skills Mrs. Sara Murdick brought with them, the family opened Mackinac Island’s first candy shop in 1887.

Young entrepreneur Bob Benser, Sr. arrived to the island in 1955. Grace and Jerome Murdick taught him their family fudge-making tradition using Sara’s original recipe. Bob became part of the family and in 1969 he bought Original Murdick’s Fudge on Mackinac Island. Thanks to his commitment to the all-natural recipe, the procedure and the technique, Original Murdick’s Fudge has become an iconic favorite among fudge lovers everywhere.

Today, the entire Benser family is proud to share the Original Murdick’s family fudge traditions with you. On Mom & Pop Business Day, and every day, thank you for your continued support.

Jerome Murdick, opened Murdick’s Luncheonette on Mackinac Island in 1957. Eventually it became Murdick’s Candy Kitchen. (On left: Luncheonette diners often left with a box of fudge in hand for dessert.)
